Native and alien poplar plantations are important habitats for terrestrial orchids

چکیده
Poplar monocultures are some of the most common short-rotation coppices. While they often considered low environmental value, have recently gained recognition for their multifaceted role in ecological engineering, such as carbon sinks, soil remediators or green energy producers. Nonetheless, biodiversity poplar plantations remains little known and largely overlooked. Here we conducted a systematic botanical survey 232 within Pannonian ecoregion (central Europe) order to assess plant diversity, with particular focus on terrestrial orchids. Our results highlight that almost 60% harbour orchids, several thousand specimens. Overall, documented occurrence 15 species orchids surveyed plantations, including taxa limited distributions threatened conservation status. For instance, report numerous new populations Epipactis bugacenis E. tallosii suggesting majority these occur Hungary. We analysed chemistry plantation characteristics predict richness monocultures. The probability being present is highest older larger characterized by high total organic matter content pH. conclude native alien valuable communities, other vascular plants significant importance. Using knowledge generated here, recommend delaying partial harvest increase potential.

Species distribution modelling of invasive alien species; Pterois miles for current distribution and future suitable habitats
The present study aims to predict the potential geographic distribution and future expansion of invasive alien lionfish (Pterois miles) with ecological niche modelling along the Mediterranean Sea. The primary data consisted of occurrence points of P. miles in the Mediterranean and marine climatic data layers were collected from global databases. All the used models run 100% su...
متن کاملMycorrhizal diversity in photosynthetic terrestrial orchids
• Specific orchid–fungal associations are known for nonphotosynthetic orchids but fungal diversity in photosynthetic orchids is thought to be quite broad. Specific fungal associations will figure prominently in conservation efforts, while diverse associations may require less attention. We combined culture techniques with ITS and mtLSU sequences and phylogenetic analysis to determine the geneti...
متن کاملMycorrhizal fungi isolated from native terrestrial orchids of pristine regions in Cordoba (Argentina).
Orchidaceae is a highly dependent group on the Rhizoctonia complex that includes Ceratorhiza, Moniliopsis, Epulorhiza and Rhizoctonia, for seed germination and the development of new orchid plants. Thus, the isolation and identification of orchid mycorrhizal fungi are important to understand the orchid-fungus relationship, which can lead to the development of efficient conservation strategies b...
متن کاملHybrid poplar plantations are suitable habitat for reintroduced forest herbs with conservation status
Plantations of fast-growing tree species may be of use in conservation by accelerating the restoration of forest habitat on abandoned farmland and increasing connectivity in fragmented landscapes. The objective of this study was to determine if hybrid poplar plantations can be suitable habitats for the reintroduction of native forest plant species and, if so, which abiotic factors predict succe...
متن کاملHarvesting Short-Rotation Poplar Plantations for Biomass Production
Nacrtak In Italy, short rotation forest has become very popular in recent years, with over 4,000 hectares already planted – almost exclusively with clone poplar. The study models the performance of modified forage harvesters on a range of short-rotation poplar plantations, identifies technical obstacles to the deployment of these machines and suggests solutions that may expand the capability of...
